Nature Preserve Krakow Obersee 19-5tn.jpg (1236 Byte)

The Krakower Obersee has been a Nature Preserve since 1939 and as such is the oldest Nature Preserve in Mecklenburg Vorpommern with an internationally important bird sanctuary. More than 80 species of breeding birds and 100 other bird species are present.

The lake, with its many fish, provides the basic food source for ospreys, gray herons, cormorans and beavers. You are only allowed to visit the islands and part of the Lake within the nature preserve with a park ranger. You can view the scenery while on a bike or on foot around the Krakower Obersee. There are several look-out-points for observing ospreys. Information markers at the entrance to the village Glave provide more details. You can watch the many different species of birds from a special observatory, located directly at the shore of the Lake.

Hiking suggestions: Krakow am See market – Dobbin – Glave – Bossow – Moellen – Krakow am See market (19.8km or 12 miles).

Nature Preserve Nebel11-3tn.jpg (1696 Byte)

Twenty kilometers of the small river Nebel, from its source at Lake Krakow, until right before the village of Serrahn, have been declared a nature preserve. The area where the river Nebel breaks through the Endmorane is especially charming and filled with many cosy spots.

The various sections of the river house more than thirty different fish species. The river Nebel also provides a natural habitat for beavers and trout.

If you hike through the Nebel valley from Serrahn towards Kuchelmiss it will take you past the Kuchelmisser Watermill. A special attraction in the watermill is an exhibition detailing the history of millworks.

Hiking Suggestions: Krakow am See, Markt – Zeltplatz – Seegrube – Serrahn – Ahrenshagen – Zeltplatz – Krakow am See Markt. (16.7km)
